Sunday’s (1/10/2017) referendum held in Catalonia, related to its withdrawal from the rest of Spain, was marked by extreme repression and serious episodes. The main Spanish government of Mariano Rajoy had made clear its intentions since the past few days when it moved huge police forces to the Catalan regions to block the process. As this was not achieved, throughout the day, the police forces clashed with citizens trying to vote, resulting in the injuries of many and the provocation of a chaotic situation around the polling stations.
As the Youth of SYRIZA, we absolutely condemn the strong police repression faced by the citizens of Catalonia. Police violence, intimidation of voters and the closure of electoral chambers are undemocratic practices, for which the deep neoliberal government of M. Rajoy is entirely responsible.
We must all struggle daily for a Europe that revolves around the principles of democracy, freedom, equality and solidarity. For a Europe that respects the peoples and will prioritize the interests of the many.
